QUOTE: Despite this criticism, the Deer Hunter did exceptionally well at the box-office, winning an Oscar for best picture, best director, and best supporting actor (Christopher Walken). However, there was mixed reaction from veterans and, some found the Vietnam sequence unconvincing, if not ridiculous. But one veteran, Jan Scruggs, found the movie so compelling that he was inspired to build a monument to the men and women who served. Four years later in Washington D.C. the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated to the Men and Women who gave up their lives in the Vietnam War.
